THERAPY AS GOOD AS MEDICATION

THERAPY AS GOOD AS MEDICATION

New research shows that, over time, cognitive therapy is as effective as drugs (if not more) at preventing the return of severe depression. And in the short run, therapy is less expensive than drugs. According to the 16 month study, the risk of relapse was no higher (and perhaps even lower) for those who received cognitive therapy than is was among patients who took anti-depressants. Although mood medication led to much faster improvements in symptoms, the gap closed as the study progressed.

Cognitive therapy helps people with depression cope with stresses that they might confront in the future by teaching them to examine their thinking for traces of unreality and asking them to test those beliefs against real events.

As September is International Self Awareness Month, this is a good time to start examining the assumptions you hold about yourself, your relationships and life in general. If your thought patterns tend to result in feelings of sadness, fear or hopelessness, it's time to acquire a new perspective. At Associated Counseling and Recovery Center LLC, we provide a wide range of treatment options, including treatment for substance abuse. To schedule a consultation at our center, located at 551 W. Johnson St., call 920-907-0097.
