Included on this page are short articles concerning Recovery Information from the Staff of Associated Counseling and Recovery Center LLCChildren may not leave all their problems behind after a hospital stay. There is research to show that some children who spend time in a hospital may have lingering psychological problems for months after they go home. Six weeks after being discharged from the hospital, younger children who received a higher number of invasive procedures were more likely to have medical fears, intrusive thoughts, and avoidance behaviors. Younger children and those with more serious illness tended to have a lower sense of control over their health. After six months, while there is a decline in persistent hospital-related psychological problems, they were still likely to feel less of a sense of control and more prone to medical fears. As children often have great difficulty verbalizing their fears(and are often encourages to "be brave" rather to confide their anxiety and mistrust), the accompanying emotional aspects of their physiological condition are often overlooked. Behavior issues may surface months or years after treatment has been provided and should be address promptly in a therapeutic environment.
